Sustainable. Renewable. Recycle. Reusable. Biodegradable. Toxin-free. These buzzwords should be a part of your day to day living lexicon. Why? Because we are obliterating our planet at warp speed and it’s your duty as a human being to care about what you are doing that is contributing to the state of the planet’s declining health. As a mother, it keeps me up at night. What kind of world will my children and my children’s children be inheriting? What kind of life will they have to live because we were selfish? I know I sound like a broken record, but every little bit you do to lessen your carbon footprint (and those of your family) helps tremendously.
What do I mean when I say eco living?
Live life in a way that is good for the environment not harmful. Always support and buy from local companies, products, and services. Do your research so that you are in the know and can make informed choices about the way you live so you lessen your negative impact on your surroundings. Make small changes that have lasting effect.
Below, I have defined what these buzzwords mean and how you can incorporate them into your daily routine to help you make the switch to a less impactful way of life for you and your family. Because at the rate we are going, if we don’t commit to making greener lifestyle choices and changes then the world our children will be living in will be one vastly different from the one we have now.
SUSTAINABLE: What exactly does sustainability mean? Sustainability means minimizing our consumption of natural resources so that they will still be around in the future. Something that is sustainable doesn’t harm the environment. Sustainability is paramount. Green tip: Always support local farms that grow organic produce. That’s sustainable agriculture.
RENEWABLE: Eco Chic defines renewable as “A resource that can be replenished at a rate equal to or greater than its rate of depletion. A great example of this is hemp products, which are also grown without pesticides and using very little water.” Green tip: Solar panels can provide energy for electricity from sunlight, which is classified as renewable energy. If your home can support this technology take advantage of it.
RECYCLE: Recycling means to repurpose materials that have already been used into new products. Recycling is essential if you are to be part of the green movement. Recycling eases landfill waste, lowers pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, saves energy, and so much more. Green tip: Don’t ever throw clothes away, always see if you can repurpose (you can turn old clothes into rags for the house) or donate to people in need.
REUSABLE: Reusing is akin to recycling. It simply means things you can use over and over again. Green tip: Buy a steel water bottle that you can reuse and refill everyday.
NON-TOXIC: Always make sure that the items and products you buy are not made from materials that are poisonous or toxic. You’d be surprised at how many everyday products have ingredients that are harmful. Green tip: Research is critical. Always know what’s in your things. This goes for everything (household especially).
BIODEGRADABLE: Biodegradable means that nature can break them down naturally. This is done through the air, climate, and soil. We are so technologically advanced in this day and age that we are producing many materials that are non biodegradable. They basically will stick around forever. Public enemy number 1 is PLASTIC! Green tip: bring reusable shopping bags everywhere you go for your shopping needs. Never use plastic.
